Two people have been arrested in Putnam County for allegedly stealing from victims while performing handyman work.
The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office has identified the suspects as 40-year-old David Hampton, of Jackson County, and 40-year-old Cortnie Hill, of Cookeville.
Authorities believe that while Hampton and Hill were supposed to be working at a residence, they took advantage of the situation and stole items from the home, including checks.
Detectives learned that Hampton was wanted out of Jackson County for a similar incident.
Cortnie Hill was taken into custody and reportedly surrendered most of the stolen property from the victims. Hill was charged with Aggravated Burglary, Theft of Property Between $10,000 and $60,000, and tampering with evidence.
David Hampton was charged with 3 counts of Aggravated Burglary, 1 county of Theft of Property Between $10,000 and $60,000, 2 counts of Forgery, and 2 counts of Theft Under $1,000. After he was booked into jail, police say they discovered that Hampton had swallowed several bags of drugs. He was then also charged with Introduction of Contraband in a Jail Facility.
