Caney Fork Electric employees are stepping up to support military veterans through a 50-mile ruck challenge during November, with a special group walk planned for Veterans Day.
The effort is being led by apprentice lineman Michael “Mike” Brown, an Army veteran who served nearly nine years, including time in Iraq, Kuwait and South Korea.
Brown and Caney Fork Electric General Manager Jason Riley recently joined Chad Graves on Behind the Mic to discuss the challenge and the importance of helping veterans transition to civilian life.
After leaving the military, Brown experienced some of those challenges firsthand before finding a rewarding career with Caney Fork Electric. He said he wanted to wear his Caney Fork shirt during the challenge to show fellow veterans that opportunities and a fulfilling life exist after military service.
Riley was inspired by Brown’s motivation and encouraged other employees to get involved.
The challenge benefits Stop Soldier Suicide, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing suicide among veterans and service members. Participants are encouraged to walk 50 miles throughout November, optionally carrying a weighted backpack, an activity known as rucking.
On Wednesday, Nov. 11, approximately 14 Caney Fork employees, along with spouses and representatives from neighboring utilities, will participate in a 10.5-mile walk from Newtown to Morrison.
The walk begins at 8 a.m. at 47 Commodore Drive and will follow Highway 55. Community members are welcome to participate but should contact Caney Fork in advance to coordinate transportation.
“There's veterans here in Warren County. There's veterans in White, Van Buren, DeKalb County. And if it changes one of their lives, then it's worth it,” Riley said.
Brown originally set a fundraising goal of $200, which he quickly surpassed before increasing his goal to $500. Community members can support the effort by contributing directly to his fundraiser.
