It’s Pi Day!
Pi Day is an annual celebration held on March 14 (3/14) in honor of the mathematical constant pi, whose first three figures are 3.14. Pi represents the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. The irrational number is annually celebrated in a number of slightly more rational ways including pie-eating contests and math competitions.
Pi Day was first established in 1988 by Larry Shaw, a physicist at the Exploratorium in San Francisco. The day was officially recognized by the U.S. House of Representatives in 2009. March 14, by coincidence, is also Albert Einstein’s birthday.
To celebrate the big day, The Vanilla Brand Baking Co. is serving up pie and is open until 2 p.m. Saturday, March 14. In honor of another upcoming holiday, Vanilla Bean, usually closed on Tuesdays, will be open Tuesday, March 17 from 7 a.m.-4 p.m. for St. Patrick’s Day to handle all your green-treat needs.
The bakery will have shamrock cookies, cakesicles, St. Patrick Cakes, Irish butterscotch scones and Irish beef stew for lunch.
