Looking to build on a strong season-opening performance earlier in the week, the White County Warriors returned to Ulysses G. Culley Sr. Field on Thursday night, but couldn’t dig themselves out of an early hole in an 11-2 loss to border rival Warren County.
The Warriors entered the contest looking to keep momentum rolling after a 10-0 shutout of Pickett County on Monday in the season-opener. In that game, Will Thomas authored a memorable outing with a 13-strikeout no-hitter while Preston Taylor and the offense supplied plenty of run support.
Thursday’s matchup, however, presented a different challenge against a Warren County squad that had already shown a knack for early offense. The Pioneers had opened their season with victories over Moore County (16-3) and Cumberland County (3-1), scoring 13 of their 19 runs in the first inning of those games. That trend continued for Warren County on Thursday.
The Pioneers wasted little time getting on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning. After Gage Walker reached base and moved into scoring position, he crossed home on a single by Sam Robinson combined with a throwing error, allowing Robinson to advance to second.
The opening frame continued to unravel for the Warriors as three of the first four batters reached via walk. After the early struggles on the mound, White County turned to Austin Pionke in relief. Pionke immediately settled things down by striking out the first two batters he faced.
With two outs and the bases loaded, Warren County delivered the biggest blow of the inning. Isaac Smith drove a double to left field that cleared the bases, scoring Parker Robinson, Seth Barrett and Corban Felton. Smith’s two-bagger pushed the Pioneer lead to 4-0.
The Pioneers weren’t finished. Smith later scored on a ground-ball single by Keagan Thompson, and Daylen Holguin followed with another RBI single to bring Thompson home. By the time the inning ended, the Pioneers had forged ahead 6-0.
Despite the early deficit, the Warriors answered in the bottom half of the inning. Cole Gentry reached and later came around to score on a sharp double off the bat of Griffin Adams, trimming the deficit to 6-1.
Pionke continued to stabilize things on the mound in the second inning. The right-hander recorded two more strikeouts and limited further damage after Warren County added a run on a groundout by Corban Felton that brought Parker Robinson across the plate to make it 7-1.
White County threatened in the bottom of the second when Kaden Siebers drew a walk and Thomas was hit by a pitch to put two runners aboard, but both were left stranded.
Pionke delivered perhaps his strongest stretch in the third inning. After Smith led off with another double, Pionke struck out two batters and induced a lineout to center field, escaping the jam without allowing a run.
The Warriors attempted to spark a rally in the bottom half of the inning. Gentry drew a leadoff walk and quickly stole second base, but his aggressive attempt to swipe third was cut down by the Pioneer defense.
Later in the inning, White County showed patience at the plate and loaded the bases after Warren starter Ryder Gilispie issued three walks. Warren County turned to Holguin in relief, but the Warriors managed to plate a run when Siebers reached on an error following a grounder to shortstop. Adams scored on the play, pulling White County within five runs, 7-2.
The Warriors’ pitching core continued to battle, but Warren County pushed its lead to 8-2 in the fourth inning, as Sam Robinson led off with a double and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Gilispie.
White County’s bullpen saw another arm enter in the fifth inning when Riley Howell took over on the mound, but the move did little to slow the Pioneer offense, which added three more runs in the frame to extend their advantage to 11-2.
Despite the deficit, the Warriors continued to search for opportunities late in the game. In the sixth inning, Siebers lined a single into left field to give White County a baserunner, but the rally stalled before any runs could cross.
White County’s defense showed a quick response in the seventh inning, retiring the Pioneers on just four pitches as Sam Robinson lined out and both Gilispie and Felton grounded out.
The Warriors’ final opportunity came in the bottom of the seventh. Gentry, Taylor and Adams each put the ball in play but were retired on groundouts, bringing the game to a close.
Following the loss, White County (1-1) will look to rebound on Friday, March 6, when they travel to Woodbury to take on Cannon County. First pitch is set for 5:30 p.m.
