This Week in Sports: June 1-7
As the calendar shifts into June, McMinnville’s local baseball and softball teams are gearing up for another busy week of competition.
Across the McMinnville Youth Baseball and Softball League, several divisions remain crowded near the top as teams continue working through the heart of their schedules.
Meanwhile, the Warren County Church League enters another important week with multiple first-place teams facing challenging tests and the McMinnville Adult Baseball League returns to the field for its second week after opening play last Sunday.
Youth League races continue to take shape
June opens with another busy slate of McMinnville Youth Baseball and Softball League action as teams move deeper into the season and begin positioning themselves for the final stretch of the regular season.
One matchup that immediately stands out comes Monday in the Girls 7-9 Division when Pioneer Building Supply and Champion Chevy.com take the field. Both teams have spent much of the season near the top of the standings, making their head-to-head meeting one of the week's most significant contests.
The Boys 7-8 Division could see more movement throughout the week. Ben Lomand Connect, TEH Construction and Still Water Realty have all spent time among the division's top contenders this season, and Tuesday's schedule includes TEH Construction facing Ben Lomand Connect while Still Water Realty takes on Kirby Group/Compass. Those results could help further clarify the pecking order in one of the league's deepest divisions.
Several of the league's older divisions also feature important games. The Boys 11-12 Division returns to action Tuesday and Friday, while the Boys 13-18 Division will be active throughout the week with games Monday and Friday. Main Street Journal, Citizens Tri County Bank, Copper Top and White County all have multiple opportunities to gain ground before the calendar turns toward the middle of June.
The younger age groups remain busy as well, with T-Ball, Girls 5-6 and Girls 7-9 teams all scheduled to play multiple times during the week.
Church League leaders face mid-season tests
The Warren County Church League enters another pivotal week with several unbeaten teams looking to maintain their place atop the standings.
In the women's division, Centertown United Methodist has jumped out to a perfect 4-0 start and holds sole possession of first place. Bibles on Base and Rock Island Church of Christ are still searching for their first victories, making Tuesday's matchup between those two clubs particularly important. Thursday's contest between Bibles on Base and Centertown United Methodist will also give the league leader another opportunity to strengthen its hold on first place.
The men's division appears far more crowded. Living Word Fellowship and New Union share the top spot at 3-0, while Holy Sticks and Rock Island Church of Christ sit just behind at 2-1. With only a few games separating the entire field, nearly every contest this week carries added significance.
By week's end, the men's standings could look much different depending on how the top contenders fare against one another.
Adult League settles into second week
The McMinnville Adult Baseball League officially opened its season Sunday, May 31, and will return for its second week of action on Sunday, June 7.
Week 2 will bring a fresh set of matchups, beginning with Pirates vs. Padres at 2 p.m. The Cubs and Mets will follow at 4 p.m. before the evening concludes with Leviathans taking on the Cubs at 6 p.m.
All games will be played at Edley Newman Field.
