If you like spending your evenings at the ballpark, the Pioneers and Lady Pioneers will still have you covered during spring break. While most local teams take a brief pause with schools out for the week, the WCHS diamond squads are staying busy.
The Pioneers enter the week at 7-0 after finishing off another perfect stretch of games Saturday, while the Lady Pioneers are set to open District 6-4A play with road trips to Shelbyville and Lincoln County.
For most of the other programs, the week will serve as a chance to rest and reset before boys soccer, track, tennis and flag football all return to full schedules next week.
As always, This Week in Sports is brought to you by Westwood Church of Christ, the presenting sponsor of all Main Street Journal spring sports coverage this year.

Lady Pioneers building momentum
The Lady Pioneers didn’t get the start they wanted to the season, but by the time the weekend wrapped up in Gordonsville, Warren County looked much closer to the team it expects to be heading into district play.
Warren County finished the tournament 3-1, using a pair of wins Saturday to erase the frustration of a tough loss earlier in the event. The Lady Pioneers showed they can win different kinds of games too, grinding out a tight 1-0 victory over Watertown before breaking things open offensively later in the weekend against DeKalb County and Gordonsville.
Ceilee Gudat delivered one of the steadier performances of the weekend in the circle, helping lead the shutout win over Watertown and returning later to help keep DeKalb County in check. At the plate, several players contributed throughout the tournament, including Kaydence Wiser, Lola Wells and Ruby Denning as Warren County started finding more rhythm offensively.
The lone setback came against Macon County, where the Tigerettes capitalized on a few early opportunities and rode a big power display to an 8-0 win. Instead of letting the loss linger, the Lady Pioneers responded by playing two of their most complete games of the young season Saturday.
Now the focus shifts to district play, where momentum will matter.
Warren County begins its district schedule this week against two very familiar opponents. The Lady Pioneers have handled Shelbyville in several recent matchups, but Lincoln County has proven to be a much tougher hurdle.
The Lady Falcons are the defending district champions and were responsible for ending Warren County’s postseason run last year when a walk-off home run in extra innings sent the Lady Pioneers into the loser’s bracket of the district tournament.
With the offense starting to click and the pitching staff settling into roles, Warren County hopes the strong finish in Gordonsville can serve as the launching point for a big stretch of district games.

Baseball team keeps rolling
Phillip King has always believed in keeping a deep roster and a busy schedule, and so far that approach has paid off.
The Pioneers enter spring break at 7-0 after finishing off another perfect week in the New Balance Tree City Classic at Patrick Ramsey Field.
Warren County showed it could win in a variety of ways during the tournament. The Pioneers rallied from behind to beat Upperman 4-3, survived a defensive battle with a 2-1 walk-off win over Stone Memorial in extra innings and finished the event with a convincing 6-0 victory over Grundy County.
Sophomore Gage Walker was sharp in his first start of the season in the finale, allowing three hits over five innings while striking out six. Braden Whinnery followed with two scoreless innings to complete the shutout.
Offensively, the Pioneers have gotten contributions from throughout the lineup. Corban Felton, Sam Robinson, Kylan Jones, Isaac Smith and Ryder Gilispie have all produced key hits during the winning streak, while the pitching staff has consistently kept opponents in check.
With the momentum building, Warren County will try to keep the perfect start going during a busy spring break slate that includes five games.
