Spring sports wasted no time heating up in Warren County. After a busy opening stretch, the action ramps up even more this week as local teams continue settling into their seasons. The baseball diamonds have already produced a pair of unbeaten teams, the Lady Pioneers softball squad is looking to bounce back after a tough opener and the WCHS flag football team will face its toughest challenge yet under the Friday night lights.

Tennis, soccer and track are also hitting their stride as teams look to back in plenty of games this week before schools take spring break. It's only been a few weeks, but key players and standout teams are already emerging in Warren County.

This is a free feature for all readers and will run every Sunday on the Main Street Journal. It is made possible through our partnership with Westwood Church of Christ, the presenting sponsor of all of our spring sports coverage this year.

Full schedules are listed at the end of the weekly update. If a game is missing, rescheduled or if you spot an error, please reach out to Jeff Simmons (Jeff.Simmons@mainstreetmedia.llc) or Sam Griffin (Sam.Griffin@mainstreetmedia.llc) and updates will be made.

Let’s get rolling.

Gus Bouldin and his WCMS teammates are looking to stay perfect.

Perfect Pioneers

When it comes to the history of Pioneer sports, few programs have enjoyed sustained success like the baseball team. For decades, Warren County has produced championships at the state, region and district level, filling trophy cases across the community.

It’s far too early to worry about what May might hold, but in March two Pioneer squads already look like diamond dandies. Both the WCMS and WCHS baseball teams remain unbeaten. The middle school group sits at 5-0, while the high school team improved to 4-0 after a win over LaVergne Saturday.

Keeping those perfect marks will be a challenge this week.

The WCMS team begins a two-game series with Upperman on Tuesday and Thursday. Since becoming conference foes in TMSAA play, the schools have developed a growing rivalry across several sports and Tuesday’s matchup will mark the first meeting on the diamond this season.

The high school Pioneers will stay busy as hosts of the New Balance Classic. All four games on Warren County’s schedule will be played at Patrick Ramsey Field.

Warren County is set to face Moore County Monday at 7:30 p.m., Upperman Tuesday at 7:30 p.m., Stone Memorial Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and Grundy County Saturday at 5:30 p.m.

Patrick Ramsey Field will host 14 total games during the event, with action beginning at 5 p.m. each weekday and at 10 a.m. Saturday. Shelbyville, DeKalb County and Sequatchie County will also be in town for games during the week.

Kaydence Wiser and WCHS are looking to bounce back against Sparta.

Diamond redo

Last week marked the season debut for the WCHS softball team, but the Lady Pioneers would likely prefer to start over if they could.

Warren County fell to Community 8-0 in the opener as the ViQueens piled up 18 strikeouts and held the Lady Pioneers hitless on the road.

The team returned to work quickly, spending time Tuesday focusing on fundamentals and regrouping for the next opportunity.

That chance comes Monday when Warren County hosts rival Sparta at 6:30 p.m.

Despite the tough opener, excitement still surrounds the Lady Pioneers program. With three college signees in the lineup and several younger players pushing for larger roles, Warren County hopes the matchup with the Warriorettes can help kickstart a strong week.

Senior Ari Rippy continues to be key to the Lady Pioneers' success.

Friday night lights

Can the Lady Pioneers move to 3-0?

It will not be easy Friday as the WCHS flag football team faces its toughest challenge so far when Blackman visits Nunley Stadium.

Warren County remained unbeaten with a convincing win over Smyrna Friday night. Blackman improved to 2-0 a night earlier by blanking White County 35-0 on the road after opening the season with a 50-0 victory over LaVergne.

The Lady Blaze have yet to allow a point this season.

Warren County has been nearly as strong defensively, outscoring Smyrna and White County 64-13 in two games. Avery Womack leads the defense with 12 flag pulls and an interception, while Alyssa Boyd and Harper Fuston each have two interceptions.

The Lady Pioneers have also experimented with a two-quarterback approach. Freshman Dorlia Haycox is 10-for-17 for 188 yards and three touchdowns through two games. Junior Chloe Wanamaker, last year’s all-district quarterback, is 12-for-19 for 178 yards and five touchdowns while also rushing for a team-high 156 yards.

Kickoff for Friday’s Region 3-AA matchup is scheduled for 7 p.m.
