With school sports action taking a brief pause for the summer, the focus in Warren County shifts to the city baseball and softball diamonds.
A packed week of local action awaits as McMinnville Youth Baseball/Softball and Warren County Church League teams return to the field with another full slate of games spread across multiple venues, that is if the weather behaves itself.
Youth leagues heating up
Several division races could tighten up this week as the McMinnville Youth Baseball/Softball League schedule heads into the final stretch of May, with a handful of unbeaten teams and first-place clubs facing opportunities to either strengthen their grip or open the door for challengers.
The biggest spotlight may fall on the Boys 7-8 Division, where Ben Lomand Connect enters the week undefeated at 5-0, but TEH Construction and Still Water Realty are both sitting close behind at 4-1. Ben Lomand Connect has two games on the schedule this week, including a Tuesday matchup with TEH Construction and a Friday contest against Still Water Realty. By the end of the week, the division picture could look completely different.
The Girls 10-14 Division also features several key contests. Moose Lodge 1725 sits atop the standings at 7-1 with Fog House Firearms close behind at 6-3. Security Federal, currently 3-5, will get two chances to shake up the standings this week, facing Fog House on Thursday. Moose Lodge will also square off with First National Bank later that night.
The Boys 11-12 Division could see movement as well. Roscoe Brown remains unbeaten at 6-0 and has controlled the division to this point, but Warren First 931 (3-3) has a pair of games this week as it tries to strengthen its hold on second place. Smartt Assembly of God, still searching for its first victory at 0-6, will also have an opportunity to change momentum Friday.
Elsewhere, Turner & Sons Nursery enters the week atop the Boys 5-6 Division at 5-0-1, while 3R Earthworx remains perfect at 9-0 in Boys 9-10 play and Pioneer Building Supply continues to stand alone at 7-0 in Girls 7-9 competition. Several of the league leaders won't be in action this week, giving the teams behind them a chance to apply pressure as the calendar moves toward June.
