NHC Eastern Region donates $100,000 in support of Roane State’s new health science campus and simulation center

National HealthCare Corporation’s (NHC) Eastern Region and its Foundation for Geriatric Education (TFGE) have teamed up to give $100,000 to support students attending Roane State’s all-new Knox Regional Health Science Education Center.

The 130,000-square-foot facility is located at 9575 Sherrill Boulevard, across from Parkwest Medical Center, and houses health science programs offered by both Roane State and the Tennessee College of Applied Technology (TCAT) Knoxville.

The center has expanded Roane State’s presence in Knox County, allowing both Roane State and TCAT Knoxville to grow its health science courses and programs. The facility’s flagship Roane State Simulation Center – the first of its kind in Tennessee – immerses students in real-world scenarios that elevate their training.

“This new campus is an amazing, state-of-the-art facility that will make a tremendous difference in the healthcare education and workforce in our community,” NHC Eastern Region Vice President Jay Nason said. “NHC and TFGE are proud to be a small part of the THRIVE campaign. We plan to stay connected with Roane State and look forward to hearing about the success of the next round of students who will be learning in this impressive campus.”

Roane State classes in the new location include nursing, EMS, and medical laboratory technology. Polysomnography and respiratory therapy courses will be offered soon along with Roane State’s continuing education courses that assist healthcare professionals with maintaining professional licensure.

With the added space, Roane State is also planning to launch diagnostic medical sonography (ultrasound), echocardiography, and neurodiagnostic technology programs.

“This gift moves us closer to our goal of ensuring all students have access to an excellent health science education,” said Scott Niermann, executive director of Roane State Foundation. “We look forward to building on this strong partnership with NHC as we seek to add new course offerings for students and healthcare professionals.”

The State of Tennessee contributed more than $67.5 million toward this $75 million project. Roane State Foundation has raised nearly $6 million of the additional $7.5 million needed to equip the campus and sustain operations. With the campus now open, the campaign has shifted focus to helping students directly by offsetting costs of attendance.

“As we continue raising dollars for scholarships and other student aid, we welcome the support of citizens across the region who value a healthy, thriving community,” Niermann added.
