McMinnville resident and Ariton, Ala. native Winston Rainer “Mac” Hughes, 83, was born Oct. 9, 1942 and died July 8, 2026 at his residence following an extended illness.

A retired employee of Sugar Cane Growers Cooperative and of the Pentecostal faith, he was the son of the late Captain Ray Downing and Eula Irene Burke. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by stepfather, Freeman Burke.

He was married to Hazel Hughes of McMinnville on Dec. 5, 1960. In addition to his wife, Mr. Hughes is survived by children, Matt Hughes of McMinnville and Cynthia Ronca of Summitville; grandchildren, Crystal (Ryan) Byrd and Vincent (Kimberly) Ronca; great-grandchildren, Brayden Byrd, Emery Byrd, Kayne Bradley, Winston Ronca, Willow Ronca and Kylie Ronca; special sister-in-law, Alvina Ferrell and brothers-in-law, Robert (Debbie) Hollon and Perry Hollon.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 12, 2026 in High’s Chapel with Pastor George Reynolds officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Zion Cemetery in Warren County. Visitation will be Saturday from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. until time of service at High’s.
