Betty Imogene Bounds was born Jan. 15, 1933 and peacefully made her journey home on Oct. 22, 2026 at 93 years of age. She was the daughter of the late Thurman Hale and Della Mai Allen. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Charles Fletcher "Jake" Bounds; daughter Phyllis Donell Bounds; son-in-law Barry Hillis, as well as multiple half-brothers and half-sisters.
While our hearts ache at saying goodbye, we are forever grateful for the years we were blessed to have her as our granny and our Gigi. She has forever left a great impact on our lives and anyone who has came into contact with her. Over her 93 years, she was one to always defy the odds, no matter what.
Growing up, she wanted to attend beauty school; however, with only an 8th-grade education, her family tried to persuade her to get a factory job. Nevertheless, she applied to take the beauty school entrance exam. Passing score on the test was a 20, which was equivalent to a high school education. Betty not only scored the passing grade but scored a 27, which was indicative of a college education. Betty got married at 14 and was not only a student, but beginning a family during this time.
Betty eventually bought her dream home and moved her "shop" into her home. This is where her clientele also became family friends. Each day they came to get their perms, colors, hair combed and set and were also served a homecooked meal and sweet tea by Jake. Betty was a talented and dedicated beautician who continued to do hair until she was 87 years old.
Beyond her work as a beautician, she also was a creative soul. She enjoyed painting portraits and landscapes, capturing beauty through her own eyes. She had a special love for her old house, antiques and her dog, Gracie.
Betty is survived by her only grandchild, Alysia Hillis (Jeff Grissom); great-grandchildren, Kaeden Powers, Madelyn Powers and Ansli Womack; several half-sisters; a half-brother and nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the Adoration Home Health nurses and therapists and allowing her to become "Granny" to them as well. Also, to Gentiva Hospice for allowing her to pass peacefully at home.
Per Betty's request, no services will be held. She wished to be cremated and then laid to rest beside Jake, Phyllis and Barry.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Meals on Wheels or the local animal shelter.
High Funeral Home and High's Cremations, Inc. are in charge of arrangements.
