The City of McMinnville is closely monitoring the winter storm moving into our area tonight. The City is committed to keeping residents safe and informed throughout this event. Crews are prepared and on standby, but need your partnership to ensure everyone stays safe as conditions deteriorate.
Below is the essential information you need regarding road priorities, facility closures and critical safety steps to protect your home and family. Please read through these updates carefully and share them with your neighbors.
ROAD OPERATIONS & DRIVING SAFETY
- Priority 1 Routes: Crews are focused on emergency access routes, state roads and main arteries.
- Priority 2 Routes: Neighborhood streets will be addressed only after primary routes are stable.
- Snow & Ice Removal Plan: For more details on how teams prioritize city streets, you can view the Public Works Snow Removal page here.
- Stay Home: Please stay off the roads to keep them clear for emergency responders and utility crews.
- If You Must Drive: Driving on ice requires 100% of your attention. Turn off cruise control, put away your phone and be fully engaged with both hands on the wheel. Drive significantly below the speed limit and increase your following distance by at least three times. Clear every window and all snow and ice before starting your trip.
EXTENSION CORD & HEATING SAFETY
- No Extension Cords for Heaters: Never plug a space heater into an extension cord or power strip. They can overheat and cause a fire. Always plug heaters directly into a wall outlet.
- Generator Placement: Keep generators outdoors only and at least 20 feet away from your home. Never run them in a garage or basement.
- Inspect Equipment: Check all cords for frays or damage before use. Do not run cords under rugs or furniture.
FACILITY & PARK CLOSURES
- Milner Recreation Center: Closed on Saturday, Jan. 24.
- Riverfront Park: No public access is permitted during this weather event.
UTILITY SAFETY & REPORTING
- Water & Sewer Leaks: To report water running in the street or from a building, call the Water Maintenance line at 931-473-3166. For after-hour emergencies, call 931-224-8150.
- MES (McMinnville Electric System): Report outages to 931-473-3144. Always stay at least 30 feet away from downed lines—assume they are live.
- Home Care: Drip your cold water faucets, keep your heat at 55° or higher, and open cabinet doors under sinks to protect pipes.
COMMUNITY CARE & WALKING SAFETY
- Welfare Checks: Please check on your neighbors, especially the elderly. They are at the highest risk for falls and may need help ensuring their home is safe and warm.
- Black Ice Warning: Be extremely cautious of "black ice." Even if a surface looks clear, assume it is slick.
- Walking Safety: Walk like a penguin (take short, flat-footed steps) to help avoid slips and falls on icy surfaces.
