Ever wondered what it takes to cut someone out of a wrecked vehicle or how firefighters train to battle a burning building? This Saturday, White County's first responders will give the community a chance to see some of that work up close.

First Responder Day is set for Saturday, Oct. 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Walmart parking lot in Sparta. The event will bring together local firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, and other first responders for an afternoon of demonstrations, activities, and opportunities to meet the people who serve White County.

Two live demonstrations will give visitors a closer look at the work first responders do. A fire trailer live burn is scheduled for 11 a.m., followed by a vehicle extrication demonstration at 1 p.m., showing how rescue crews work to free people trapped in damaged vehicles.

Families can also explore emergency vehicles, enjoy children's activities, try their hand at a bean bag toss, and take photos. Smokey Bear will be making an appearance, too.

The event will also offer something practical for homeowners. Visitors can stop by the fire safety booth to sign up for free smoke detector installation in their homes.

First Responder Day is an opportunity to learn more about the work that goes into keeping White County safe, ask questions, and thank the men and women who answer the call when help is needed.
