As a winter storm is expected to move through the area this weekend, McMinnville Electric System officials are encouraging customers to take a few moments to review important safety information in case of power outages.
Customers are asked to report power outages as soon as it is safe to do so by calling MES at (931) 473-3144. Downed power lines, damaged electrical equipment or utility poles should also be reported immediately. For emergencies that pose an immediate threat to life or property, call 911 immediately.
MES reminds the public that downed power lines are extremely dangerous and should always be treated as if they are energized. Residents should stay at least 30 feet away from fallen power lines or any object touching a line. Never walk or drive over downed lines and keep children and pets well away. If a power line falls onto a vehicle, remain inside the vehicle until emergency responders say it is safe to exit.
For those who may use generators during an outage, safety is critical. Generators should be operated outdoors only, never inside homes, garages or near doors or windows. Units should be placed at least 20 feet away from buildings. Generators should never be connected directly to a wall outlet, and only heavy-duty extension cords rated for outdoor use should be used.
During any restoration efforts, MES crews will first focus on critical infrastructure, followed by outages impacting the largest number of customers. Restoration times may vary depending on weather conditions and safety concerns. Residents are asked to stay clear of utility crews and equipment while work is underway.
MES thanks customers for their patience and encourages everyone to stay safe as the winter weather approaches.
