What started as an after-school art activity at Northfield Elementary has turned into a moment of national recognition for a group of young artists — and one standout cover design.

Earlier this school year, students in Northfield’s After-School program took part in the nationwide Young Artists Monster Madness contest, an initiative that challenged children ages 4 to 12 to create, draw, and name their own original monsters. The project, led by teacher Teresa Holman, encouraged creativity at every level — from early doodlers to students beginning to develop their own artistic style.

Months later, the results are in — and they brought exciting news back to White County.

Holman was notified that 26 Northfield students had their artwork selected for publication in the contest’s official full-color anthology, a collection featuring submissions from across the country. The book showcases a wide range of imaginative designs, celebrating the creativity of young artists nationwide.

But that wasn't all.

Fourth grader Dalton Hickey was named the contest’s “Favorite Artist,” earning the distinction of having his monster illustration featured on the front cover of the book. Hickey's drawing was chosen from among the thousands of entries submitted nationwide. In recognition of the achievement, he also received a special goody bag filled with art supplies from the contest organizers.

For Holman, who introduced the project to her after-school students last fall, the recognition reflects both the creativity and effort put in by the entire group.

The contest itself is designed to nurture imagination and artistic expression, giving students a chance to see their ideas move beyond the classroom and into print. From colorful, playful creatures to more detailed and imaginative designs, the finished collection captures a wide range of creativity from students across the country — including those from right here at Northfield Elementary.
