One season is coming to a close, another athlete is chasing state success and two unbeaten elementary basketball teams are looking to keep their perfect records intact.

There's plenty to keep Warren County sports fans busy this week, with Thursday bringing two of the biggest events as Emma Woodlee makes her third consecutive state cross country appearance and the Pioneers host LaVergne in the Nurserymen's Bowl.

Meanwhile, Warren County Middle School basketball and wrestling continue their seasons, while unbeaten Boyd Christian and West look to maintain their grip on the elementary basketball standings as the regular season enters its final two weeks.

Pioneers look to finish strong in Nurserymen's Bowl

Quarterback Brady Swallows holds up the Nurserymen's Bowl trophy following last year's victory over Community. The Pioneers will be preparing to defend their title Thursday against LaVergne.

The final chapter of the 2026 season is approaching, but the Pioneers still have a chance to give it a winning ending.

After back-to-back blowout victories over Howard and Glencliff brought them back to .500, Warren County (5-5) will close the season on Thursday, Nov. 5, against LaVergne (0-10) in the 19th edition of the Nurserymen's Bowl. Kickoff at Nunley Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m.

The matchup marks the second consecutive year the bowl game has been held since its revival in 2025, when Warren County rolled past Community 64-0. Originally played from 1975 through 1992, with no game in 1989, the event has featured Warren County five previous times, with the Pioneers holding a 4-1 record.

Thursday's contest will also be the third all-time meeting between Warren County and LaVergne. The teams split their previous two matchups at Nunley Stadium in 1997 and 1998, with the Pioneers winning 41-35 in 1997 before falling 20-0 the following season.

Warren County enters the finale riding its best stretch in several weeks after defeating Glencliff 41-6 on Senior Night last Friday, a victory that brought the Pioneers back to .500 following a three-game losing streak.

Junior quarterback A.J. Whitman accounted for five touchdowns in the win, rushing for 192 yards and three scores while completing 11 of 14 passes for 129 yards and two more touchdowns. Carter Lee and Marek Sadlon each hauled in touchdown receptions, while Dylan Aguilar added a rushing score.

For coach Eric Belew, the goal heading into the final week is to build on that momentum while sharpening the execution.

"I just want to see us go out and have the effort that we had tonight, but have the execution that I know that we can have," Belew said following the Glencliff victory. "I want us to play at our ceiling. I don't care about anything else in regards to what happens stat-wise. I want us to execute and enjoy doing it."

A win Thursday would give Warren County a 6-5 finish and its second consecutive winning season.

Fans unable to attend can listen on Star 107 (107.3 FM), with Jeff Barnes handling play-by-play alongside Ben Matheney. Radio coverage begins at 6:45 p.m., while live video will be available through Warren County Schools Television on YouTube and BLTV Channel 180.

Woodlee takes another shot at state

WCHS junior Emma Woodlee races alongside Siegel's Mercy Whitt during last week's Section 4-3A championships, where Woodlee finished third to secure a third consecutive trip to state.

For Emma Woodlee, another cross country season has brought another opportunity to compete among the state's best.

The Warren County junior runner will make her third consecutive appearance at the TSSAA Division I Class AAA State Cross Country Championships on Thursday, Nov. 5, entering the meet fresh off a career-best performance at sectionals.

Woodlee secured her latest trip to state in impressive fashion last Monday, finishing third at the Section 4-3A championships with a personal-best time of 19 minutes, 55.34 seconds. Her performance highlighted a historic afternoon for the Warren County program, which hosted the sectional championships for the first time.

"I'm just thankful to be going to state," Woodlee said following the race. "It's just another great opportunity to put myself out there."

Woodlee's third-place finish came behind only Siegel's Emery Stout and Mercy Whitt, with Whitt edging her for second by just nine-hundredths of a second.

The result capped a strong postseason performance following a regular season that included two individual victories and five top-six finishes.

WCHS coach Kelsea Turner praised Woodlee's determination, particularly her pursuit of a sub-20-minute finish.

"Going to state three years in a row is something for her to be proud of," Turner said. "She's goal-driven. She was really shooting for the sub-20s. So she got it, and we're happy for her, and she's going to have to run her best whenever it comes down to state next week."

Woodlee will be looking to improve on her previous state finishes, having placed 84th as a freshman in 2024 with a time of 20:56.77 before finishing 106th last fall in 21:04.53.

Her sectional performance was more than a minute faster than either of those efforts, giving the Lady Pioneer plenty of momentum heading into Thursday's championship race, which will take place at 2:50 p.m. at Shelby Farms Park in Memphis.

WCMS basketball faces another busy week

Two games into the new season, the WCMS Pioneers have yet to taste defeat, while the Lady Pioneers are looking to rebound from their first setback.

Both teams will return to action twice this week, hosting Tullahoma East on Tuesday, Nov. 3, before traveling to Cannon County on Friday, Nov. 6. The girls games are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. on both nights.

The Pioneers have opened their second season under coach Isaiah Grayson with a pair of convincing victories, defeating Tullahoma West 59-25 and Tullahoma East 47-20.

Warren County's 2-0 start has been fueled by strong defensive performances and the play of Brody Chisam and Cooper Murphy, who have helped the Pioneers outscore their first two opponents by a combined 61 points.

Chisam has averaged 17.5 points through the opening two contests, following an 18-point performance against Tullahoma West with 17 points, four rebounds and four steals against East.

Murphy, meanwhile, opened the season with 17 points against West, including his first middle school dunk, before adding eight points, six rebounds and seven steals in Thursday's road victory.

The Lady Pioneers enter the week at 1-1 under second-year coach Tyra Rubio after splitting their opening two matchups.

Warren County opened with a dominant 35-12 victory over Tullahoma West, holding the Lady Bobcats scoreless in both the first and fourth quarters. Hailey Geesling led the way with 11 points, while L.B. Guthrie added nine and Abby Blankenship contributed seven.

However, the Lady Pioneers encountered a much tougher challenge Thursday at Tullahoma East, falling behind 16-0 before suffering a 40-18 defeat.

Guthrie led Warren County with five points in the loss, while Ava Carden added four.

Tuesday's rematch against Tullahoma East will give both teams an early opportunity to measure their progress before closing the week on the road.

Unbeaten records face major tests in elementary basketball

With the final two weeks of the elementary basketball regular season approaching, two teams remain unbeaten, but both face important challenges in the days ahead.

The Boyd Lady Broncos and West Wizards each enter the week at 7-0, sitting atop their respective standings after another round of victories Thursday.

The Lady Broncos continued their dominant campaign with a 38-1 victory over the West, holding the Lady Wizards without a field goal throughout the contest. Sky Wright scored 11 points, while Juliette Ferguson added nine.

Boyd will put its perfect record on the line Monday when it hosts Hickory Creek in a rematch of Oct. 22’s battle of unbeatens and last season's championship game before traveling to Irving College on Tuesday for a rescheduled matchup against the third-place Lady Tigers (6-1).

Centertown (7-1) remains close behind in second place  and will host Morrison on Monday before welcoming Hickory Creek on Thursday.

On the boys side, West continued its unbeaten run with a 38-10 victory over Boyd, led by Cam Chadwell's 19 points and 11 from Princeton Scott.

The Wizards will visit Bobby Ray on Monday before hosting second-place Dibrell (6-1) on Thursday in a showdown between the division’s top two teams.

Centertown (6-2) also remains in contention near the top after defeating Eastside 44-9 on Thursday. The Warriors will host Morrison on Monday, looking to avenge last week's narrow 28-27 loss to the Eagles, before facing Hickory Creek on Thursday.

Morrison has been one of the hottest teams in the boys division, winning three consecutive games to climb back to .500 after a 1-4 start. The Eagles defeated Bobby Ray 38-23 on Thursday behind 19 points from Trey Hawkins.

With the regular season winding down, the results of this week's matchups could go a long way toward determining the final standings and postseason positioning.
