
Smithville resident and Viola native Thelma Jean Gwyn, 91, was born November 20, 1933 and died October 14, 2025 at St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital in Murfreesboro following a brief illness.
A former cook for Meals on Wheels and Warren County School System and a member of the Church of Christ, she was the daughter of the late Hugh and Walsie Mercer Winton. She was married to Leonard Gwyn, Jr. who preceded her in death on December 21, 1989. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by sons, Larry Gwyn and Mark Gwyn and siblings, Beatrice Webb, Sadie Winton, Ernest Winton, Lular Winton, H.B. Winton, Fred Winton, Roberta Ramsey and Clara Mae Wilkerson.
Mrs. Gwyn is survived by daughter, Cathy (Steve) Officer of Smithville; son, James "Mickey" (Marion) Gwyn of Murfreesboro; grandchildren, LaShaun (Thad) Davenport, Tara Gwyn, Tamara Gwyn, Bryan Officer and David Officer; bonus granddaughter, Maritza League; great-grandchildren, Donovan Gwyn, Cason Coffee and Langston Davenport; daughter-in-law, Eva Gwyn of Florida; a host of nieces and nephews and special friend, Phillip Smith, Jr.
Funeral service will be held at noon Monday, October 20, 2025 in High’s Chapel with Ralph Thompson officiating. Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory cemetery in Warren County. Visitation will be Sunday from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. and Monday from 11 a.m. until time of service at High’s.
