District races don’t ease you into anything. They force answers.
Across Warren County, this week is packed with matchups that will start separating contenders from teams still trying to find footing. WCHS baseball is looking to turn a strong overall record into district results, WCHS flag football is building momentum behind one of the most disruptive defenses in the state, and the rest of the county slate is filled with opportunities for WCHS, WCMS and Boyd teams to gain ground as April begins to take shape.
As always, This Week in Sports is brought to you by Westwood Church of Christ, the presenting sponsor of all Main Street Journal spring sports coverage this year.
Let’s get rolling.

WCHS baseball still searching for district breakthrough
The Pioneers have checked just about every box this season except one: winning district games.
After another dominant showing Saturday — a 13-1 win at LaVergne — WCHS baseball sits at 16-4 overall. Every loss has come in district play.
That’s the piece that hasn’t clicked yet.
And it won’t get any easier this week.
Cookeville is next on the schedule, and the Cavaliers come in unbeaten in District 6-4A after sweeping Lincoln County. They’re widely considered one of the top teams in the Upper Cumberland and present another stiff test for a Warren County team still trying to find answers in district games.
If the Pioneers are going to stop the slide Monday at Patrick Ramsey Field, it starts at the plate.
Warren County has been shut out at home in both of its district matchups, finishing with just one hit in each game. The struggles haven’t been isolated to those nights either. Through four district contests, the Pioneers are hitting just .138 as a team, a stark contrast to the production they’ve shown the rest of the season.
Overall, the lineup has been one of the team’s strengths. Gage Walker is hitting .382 at the top, Adrian Harris has returned from ACL surgery in August and is batting .375 in limited at-bats, and Corban Felton is hitting .356. In total, seven players are batting over .300 on the year.
But that success hasn’t carried over when it matters most.
Only three players — Walker, Sam Robinson and Kylan Jones — have multiple hits in district play, and sustained offense has been hard to find.
On the mound, Walker has taken on a bigger role in district games and delivered. The right-hander owns a 1.05 ERA over 13.1 innings with 11 strikeouts, but still sits at 0-2 after pitching well in both shutout losses.
That’s been the story so far. Strong pitching, not enough run support.
If that’s going to change this week, the Pioneers will need to find a way to put together complete innings on both sides — timely hits at the plate and continued consistency on the mound — against a Cookeville team that won’t give much away.

WCHS flag football building behind depth and disruption
Warren County enters the week playing some of its best football of the season, and the results are starting to match the expectations that have steadily grown around the Lady Pioneers.
Now 6-1, Warren County will be back at Nunley Stadium Thursday to face Riverdale before turning around for a road trip to Rockvale on Friday. The quick turnaround will test the Lady Pioneers’ depth, but that’s been one of their biggest strengths all season.
That depth has been especially important at quarterback.
With Chloe Wanamaker sidelined, freshman Dorlia Haycox has stepped into QB1 duties and delivered in a big way. Haycox is coming off a breakout performance against Coffee County where she threw for 286 yards and three touchdowns, showing poise and accuracy while spreading the ball to a deep group of playmakers. Her ability to keep the offense on schedule has helped Warren County avoid any drop-off despite the injury to its starter.
Those playmakers continue to produce across the board.
Maci McBride has emerged as the team’s most consistent target, leading the Lady Pioneers with 441 receiving yards while also making a massive impact on defense. McBride has 12 interceptions this season, including eight in the last two games alone, highlighting just how disruptive she’s been on the back end.
Harmoni Kennerly has been the team’s top scoring threat through the air, hauling in a team-high seven touchdown receptions and consistently stretching defenses with her ability to get behind coverage.
While the offense has been explosive, the defense has become the defining unit for Warren County.
Through seven games, the Lady Pioneers have recorded 28 interceptions, turning takeaways into points and routinely putting the offense in favorable field position. That ball-hawking secondary, combined with a relentless pass rush, has helped fuel a recent stretch where Warren County has strung together multiple shutouts and controlled games from start to finish.
The challenge this week will be maintaining that same level of focus in a condensed schedule.
Riverdale and Rockvale will both look to slow down a Warren County team that has been dictating the pace on both sides of the ball. For the Lady Pioneers, the formula remains simple: protect the football, continue to create turnovers and let their playmakers do the rest.
If that continues, Warren County will carry plenty of momentum into the heart of its schedule.
