With tournament season heating up in youth baseball and softball, unbeaten teams defending first place in Church League softball and a revived Church Volleyball League beginning to take shape, another busy week of local sports is on tap across McMinnville.

Tournament time takes center stage

The spotlight this week belongs to the McMinnville Youth Baseball and Softball League postseason.

Championship hardware will be awarded Monday night in the Girls 10-14 Division when top-seeded Moose Lodge 1725 takes on No. 2 Fog House Firearms at Pete Holt Field. Moose Lodge enters the title game after finishing the regular season atop the standings at 10-2 and rolling past First National Bank 16-4 in the semifinals. Fog House advanced via a semifinal forfeit and will try to knock off the division's top seed for the championship.

The Girls 7-9 Division tournament also gets underway Monday. Leann Cordell/Edward Jones and Brent's Computer Center will meet in a play-in game, with the winner advancing to face unbeaten Pioneer Building Supply later that evening. The other semifinal features Champion Chevy and McMinnville Pallet.

Pioneer enters tournament play as the lone undefeated team in the division at 10-0 after defeating both Brent's Computer Center and Champion Chevy last week. Champion Chevy finished second at 8-2, while McMinnville Pallet surged into the postseason with a .500 record and momentum after a decisive victory over Leann Cordell/Edward Jones.

The Boys 7-8 Division tournament takes center stage Tuesday. Ben Lomand Connect earned the No. 1 seed after completing a perfect 9-0 regular season, while TEH Construction, Still Water Realty and MTR Equipment Rental all entered Friday’s quarterfinal round with legitimate championship aspirations. Semifinal winners will meet later Tuesday evening for the tournament title.

The regular season also continues in a handful of divisions. Roscoe Brown, still sitting atop the Boys 11-12 standings at 7-1, will face Warren First 931 in a matchup that could tighten the race if Warren First can pull off the upset.

In Boys 13-18 action, unbeaten Copper Top has a chance to further strengthen its hold on first place with games Monday against White County Babe Ruth and Friday against Citizens Tri-County Bank. Main Street Journal and Citizens Tri-County Bank also square off Monday.

Heavyweights collide in Church League softball

A showdown between the two remaining unbeaten teams highlights this week's Church League softball schedule.

Tuesday's men's slate concludes with first-place New Union (6-0) facing second-place Living Word Fellowship (5-0) in what could be one of the biggest regular-season games of the summer. The winner will emerge as the lone undefeated team in the league heading into the second half of the season.

Holy Sticks (3-2) also has an opportunity to move up the standings with games against Hebron Church of Christ on Monday and Living Word Fellowship on Thursday. Meanwhile, New Union returns Thursday for another key contest against Hebron.

On the women's side, Centertown United Methodist remains perfect at 5-0 and can continue its dominant start with games against Bibles on Base on Tuesday and Rock Island Church of Christ on Thursday. Rock Island enters the week at 2-2 and remains the only team within striking distance of the league leaders, while Bibles on Base continues to search for its first win of the season.

Contenders emerge in Church League volleyball

After a successful opening week, Church League Volleyball returns for another round of action at McMinnville Church of God.

Old Testament Athletes lead the standings at 2-0 after opening the season with victories over Called to Serve and Rolling Acres BIC. Several teams sit right behind them at 1-0, including Rock Island Church of Christ, Westwood Church of Christ and Cross Denominators.

Tuesday's schedule features four matches, highlighted by Cross Denominators taking on First Baptist Church and Westwood Church of Christ facing Old Testament Athletes in a battle between undefeated teams.

Thursday's action includes McMinnville Church of God meeting Safe Harbor Church of God, while Rock Island Church of Christ closes the night against Covenant Fellowship Church.

With most teams still having played only one or two matches, this week's results could significantly reshape the early standings.

Adult Baseball League rolls on

The McMinnville Adult Baseball League will have one of its busiest weekends of the season with both Saturday makeup games and the regular Sunday slate scheduled at Edley Newman Field.

Saturday's action features three Week 2 makeup contests. The Leviathans open the day against the Mets at 2 p.m. before returning to face the Padres at 4 p.m. The final game of the day pits the Cubs against the Mets at 6 p.m.

The schedule continues Sunday with another tripleheader. The Cubs take on the Leviathans at 2 p.m., followed by the Padres facing the Pirates at 4 p.m. The weekend concludes with the Padres squaring off against the Mets at 6 p.m.

With six games scheduled over two days, several teams will have an opportunity to make significant moves in the standings as the league approaches the midway point of the summer season.
