Warriorettes edge Jackson County for fourth straight win

White County High School soccer squeezed out another win Tuesday night, defeating Jackson County by the narrowest of margins, 2-1.

The victory was the fourth straight for the Warriorettes, who remain undefeated to start the season.

“It was a tough battle all night,” head coach Madison Mason said. “It was a fun game for the crowd, but it was stressful from my spot on the sideline.”

For nearly the entire first half, neither team could break through as White County and Jackson County battled through almost 40 minutes of scoreless play. That changed just before the break.

Makayla Sullivan, now in her second season with the Warriorettes, stepped up for a penalty kick and found the back of the net, giving White County a 1-0 advantage heading into halftime.

Jackson County found the equalizer in the second half, tying the game at 1 goal apiece as the back-and-forth battle continued.

The Warriorettes eventually found the advantage they needed when freshman striker Sami Benson stepped up for a direct kick and put it into the back of the net, giving White County a 2-1 lead that would hold through the final whistle.

While Sullivan and Benson provided the goals, Mason pointed to junior midfielder Anna Joliff as a major factor in keeping White County in position to win. Joliff helped command the field, creating opportunities and directing play as the Warriorettes worked through the back-and-forth match.

“She’s a key part of our success,” Mason said, crediting Joliff’s leadership and her ability to see the field and direct the game.

With four wins now behind them, the Warriorettes have one more non-district test before turning their attention to district play. White County will travel to Macon County on Thursday before opening its district schedule Tuesday against DeKalb County.
