The White County High School Warriorettes opened the season at home Tuesday night, but they couldn’t keep up with the Roane County Varsity Yellow Jackets and took a 5-0 loss on opening night.
Roane County Varsity Yellow Jackets got on the board in the top of the third inning after Branham singled to the left side of the infield, and Dryman grounded into a fielder's choice, each scoring one run.
Mabry Taylor led things off in the circle for White County. The starter surrendered 12 hits and five runs (four earned) over five and two-thirds innings, striking out four and walking one. Annie Burrier took over pitching duties for the final inning, giving up one hit and one walk while striking out one.
Addie Norvell led the Warriorettes at the plate with two hits in three at bats from the leadoff position. Anna McCulley and Kami Clark each picked up a hit as well. White County had nine base runners across the six innings as Norvell, along with Burrier and Addison Howell, were all hit by a pitch and Jordan Wright and Howell each picked up a base on balls. However, the Warriorettes couldn’t get anything going on the basepaths.
Defensively, the Warriorettes were fairly solid, turning two double plays in the game. Taylor combined with freshman Abbi Hutson at second and senior Callie Phillips at first in the top of the second. Phillips and third baseman Addison Howell recorded the other double play in the top of the fifth inning.
The Warriorettes will look to get in the win column on Thursday when they head to Clay County.
