Warriors and Warriorettes Deliver Strong Performance Against Algood Middle

Submitted by Topher Wiles: The White County Middle School tennis program delivered an outstanding performance on the courts last night, securing impressive victories against Algood Middle School—with the Warriorettes sweeping their contest 7-0 and the Warriors claiming a strong 6-1 team win.

Beyond the numbers on the scoreboard, the evening was a testament to the deep-rooted respect and camaraderie built between the two programs over the past four years. Algood Middle’s players showcased exceptional integrity, relentless grit, and outstanding sportsmanship throughout every level of play, making for a memorable night of competition.

Warriorettes Roll to 7-0 Victory

Leading the way for the Warriorettes was #1 seed Lella Whorton, who extended her incredible district undefeated streak in singles play across both the 2025 and 2026 seasons. Whorton delivered an efficient 6-0 sweep, setting the tone early for White County.

Caroline Goff added a second 6-0 victory at the #4 spot, using consistent serving and sharp crosscourt returns to wrap up her match quickly. Up and down the lineup, the top seeds demonstrated veteran composure: Liz Hice brought home a dominant 6-1 win at #3, while #2 seed Mila Cantrell secured a 6-2 victory to round out an efficient top-four sweep for White County’s experienced core.

At the #5 singles position, rookie Sophie Jolly showed remarkable resolve. Battling big match nerves, Jolly found an extra gear late in the contest to claim the final two games and seal a hard-fought 6-4 win.

In doubles action, White County continued its dominance. The team of Whorton and Hice captured the #1 spot with a 6-3 victory, while Cantrell partnered with Savannah Troutman for a 6-2 win at #2 doubles. Troutman was a force at the net, putting mental pressure on her opponents with heavy, booming overheads.

In exhibition action, rookies Amelia Grizzard and Leah Kreis took on Algood’s #1 and #5 seeds in doubles play. Falling 3-6, the duo showed a fierce fighting spirit until the final point. Grizzard’s court speed proved to be a major defensive asset at the baseline, while Kreis demonstrated steady growth in her serve consistency against a significantly more experienced opponent.

Warriors Secure 6-1 Win Behind Strong Plays and a Marathon Finish

The Warriors were led at the top by 7th-grade standout Micah Wiles, who powered his way to a 6-0 victory at #1 singles. Wiles kept his opponent guessing all evening, mixing booming serves down the T with wide slices to pile up aces and forced errors.

At #2 singles, Henry Zuber matched Wiles with his own 6-0 win, relying on superior defensive mobility and sharp angle shots to pull his opponent wide. Rookie Maddox Sawyer claimed the #4 singles spot with a 6-1 win powered by a dependable first serve, while #5 seed Duke Goodwin picked up a 6-3 victory, showcasing his growing court awareness and tenacious baseline defense.

At #3 singles, veteran Grey Drouillard fell in a narrow 5-7 battle against a remarkably skilled defensive opponent from Algood. Drouillard produced one of the finest performances of his career, grinding through long, demanding rallies. As his stamina and shot tolerance continue to build, Drouillard is primed to make noise in post-season play.

In doubles competition, Wiles and Zuber dominated at the #1 spot, raining down overheads to keep Algood pinned to the baseline in a 6-2 victory. At #2 doubles, Drouillard and Sawyer capitalized on their height advantage and smooth baseline play to roll through with a 6-0 sweep. In #3 exhibition doubles, rookies Pax Ward and Levi Rogers earned a impressive 6-3 win in just their second match together, showcasing excellent footwork and court coverage.

Match of the Night: Grayson Smith’s Thriller

The highlight of the evening was a late-night thriller involving everybody's "Pal", the rookie sensation Grayson Smith at #6 singles, who entered the match undefeated on the season. Due to a lineup adjustment, Smith stepped up to face a high-quality Algood player.

Smith surged ahead early to a 5-0 lead, but the Algood competitor staged an unforgettable comeback. Pushing five of the next six games to deuce with no-ad scoring, the Algood player saved five match points—a rare feat in tennis—and took a 6-5 lead as Smith’s energy waned.

Refusing to fold, Smith mustered every ounce of reserve strength to claim the 12th game, forcing a 7-point tiebreaker at 6-6. Riding a wave of adrenaline and backed by all his teammates, coaches, and parents cheering from the sidelines, Smith took control of the tiebreak to seal a thrilling 7-3 finish (7-6 overall victory).

The match was a masterpiece of perseverance and character from both young athletes. The White County program extends its sincere appreciation to the Algood player for his extraordinary grit, sportsmanship, and high level of play.

Before stepping onto the courts in the pre-match pep-talk, the White County team reflected on a famous quote by tennis legend John McEnroe:

“What is the single most important quality of a tennis champion? I would have to say desire, staying in there and winning matches when you are not playing well.”

Last night, players on both sides of the net embodied that spirit, proving that the true victory lies in desire, respect, and relentless determination.
