A proposal to pave a portion of Welch’s Point Road—the primary route to the popular Welch’s Point overlook in White County, Tennessee—sparked considerable debate among county officials this week. The discussion, which took place during Steering Committee A’s monthly meeting, brought up ongoing questions about tourism priorities, infrastructure needs, and long-term planning for one of the region’s most scenic areas.

Welch’s Point, situated within the rugged Scotts Gulf Wilderness State Park, offers sweeping views of the Caney Fork River Gorge and is considered one of the most striking overlooks in the Upper Cumberland region. Despite its popularity among hikers, photographers, and outdoor travelers, access to the overlook has long been a challenge because the majority of Welch’s Point Road remains unpaved.
