The White County Middle School softball team closed out March the same way they started it — with a win. Tuesday night’s 5-4 victory over the DeKalb County Lady Saints marked the third straight for the Warriorettes.
White County didn’t waste any time getting started. Bianca Villano singled, Addison Finley followed with a double, and just three pitches into the game the Warriorettes had their first run. They added another before the inning ended when Kinsley Randall dropped a fly ball into shallow left-center, bringing Finley home.
DeKalb answered in the top of the second. Three singles and a walk helped the Lady Saints plate a run and trim the lead to one.
But White County had a response ready.
In the bottom of the second, Carli Goines doubled and Sophia Austin followed with a single to put two runners in scoring position with one out. Goines scored on a wild pitch, Austin moved to third, and Dreu Segraves lifted a deep fly ball to left that allowed Austin to tag up and beat the throw home. Just like that, the Warriorettes were back in control with a 4-1 lead.
The Lady Saints didn’t go away quietly. A leadoff single in the third — followed by a bunt that turned into an error — allowed a runner to circle the bases. Another single later in the inning cut the White County lead back down to one.
Again, the Warriorettes answered.
Finley reached with another single, and Paizlee Taylor followed with a triple to push across what would turn out to be the deciding run.
DeKalb added one more in the fourth after a hit batter came around to score, but that was as close as they would get. Both teams put runners on in the late innings, but neither could cash in, and White County held on for the 5-4 win.
Kambrie Taylor got the start in the circle, working two innings and allowing three runs — just one earned — on six hits and a walk while striking out two. Paizlee Taylor closed it out, tossing three innings of two-hit ball with one walk and six strikeouts.
The win is the 12th of the season for the Warriorettes, who have dropped just one game so far this year. They’ll wrap up the week at home Thursday against Stone Memorial.
