Policy discussions top school board agenda

Two policies that have already generated interest in White County schools will be back before the Board of Education Thursday night.

The White County Board of Education will meet Thursday, Sept. 10, with a 5 p.m. work session followed by the regular meeting at 6 p.m. Among the items up for discussion are the district’s policy governing the display of the Ten Commandments and other historical documents in schools, as well as its policy for students who live outside White County.

Policy 4.806, Display of Historical Documents, was issued by the board in August. The policy requires each school to prominently display the Ten Commandments along with a portion of the Declaration of Independence and the preamble to the U.S. Constitution. Displays are required to be at least 16-by-20 inches with text of at least 26-point font.

The policy returns to the board Thursday as a separate agenda item.

Also on the agenda is Policy 6.204, Attendance of Non-Resident Students. The policy governs when students who live outside White County may attend schools within the district, including approval, tuition and re-enrollment requirements. The policy is listed separately for discussion during Thursday’s meeting.

Other business includes approval of a Social Studies Textbook Committee, a district update from Director of Schools Kurt Dronebarger and several items on the consent agenda. Later in the meeting, Woodland Park Elementary will be featured in the School Board Spotlight with a look at Response to Intervention.

Public comment is allowed; however, those wishing to address the board must request to speak by signing in at the beginning of the meeting.
