White County High School softball picked up its first win of the season Friday night, erupting for a big offensive performance in a 21-6 victory over the Monterey Wildcats.
After struggling to generate runs in their first two games earlier in the week, the Warriorettes wasted little time finding their rhythm at the plate. White County pushed four runs across in the first inning to take an early lead.
Addie Norvell, who would finish the night with four hits, sparked the offense with a leadoff single and later scored on a base hit by Callie Phillips. The Warriorettes continued to apply pressure with a series of hits and took advantage of a Monterey error to quickly build the 4-0 advantage.
White County added three more runs in the top of the second inning. Norvell again got things started by reaching base before Anna McCulley joined her with a single. Both runners moved into scoring position and Norvell scored on a wild pitch. McCulley later came home when Phillips put the ball in play against the Monterey shortstop, and Phillips eventually crossed the plate as well to give White County a 7-0 lead.
Monterey responded in the bottom half of the inning. A pair of walks and a single loaded the bases before a bases-loaded walk put the Wildcats on the board. A double to center field drove in two more runs, and a defensive miscue allowed two additional runs to score before pitcher Annie Burrier was able to end the inning with the Warriorettes still in front.
White County quickly regained control of the game offensively.
The Warriorettes produced five runs in the third inning, highlighted by RBI hits from McCulley, Phillips, and Abby Howell. Burrier also helped her own cause with a two-run single during the rally as White County stretched its lead into double digits.
The offense exploded again in the fourth inning, this time plating nine runs to put the game out of reach. McCulley delivered a two-run triple during the inning while Norvell and Joslyn Wright added RBI singles as the Warriorettes continued to pile on runs.
Monterey added one more run in the bottom of the fourth, but the deficit proved too large to overcome as the run rule ended the contest with White County securing the 21-6 victory.
Burrier pitched a complete game for the Warriorettes, allowing six runs, four of them earned, on six hits and six walks while striking out five batters across four innings.
Norvell led the White County offense with four hits on the night but was joined by five other Warriorettes who recorded multiple base hits in White County's most productive offensive outing of the young season.
