Senior Night at Glenn “Buckshot” Sims Field delivered the kind of game you don’t forget.

The White County Warriorettes and Cumberland County traded punches for seven innings Thursday night, with the lead changing hands multiple times before senior Kylie Norvell ended it in style — a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh that sealed a 7-6 win over the Lady Jets.

Cumberland County struck first, stringing together two singles and a double in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead. White County didn’t take long to respond. Addison Norvell jumped on the second pitch she saw and sent it into center field, landing herself on third after a misplay. Kylie Norvell followed with a ball to the same spot to bring her home, and Anna McCulley delivered a double to even the score at 2-2.

The Lady Jets edged back in front in the third, using an error and a double to go up 3-2. Again, the Warriorettes answered. Miah Jo Swindell was hit by a pitch and moved to third on a single from Addison Norvell before Kylie Norvell cleared the bases with a double to put White County on top.

The back-and-forth didn’t stop there. Cumberland County used a mix of a single, aggressive base running, and another defensive miscue to tie things up at 4-4, and that score held until the fifth.

White County broke the tie when Annie Burrier turned a double into a run, stealing third and then tagging up to score on a deep ball from Swindell. But the Lady Jets had one more surge, putting together a double between two singles in the sixth to reclaim a 6-5 lead.

And once again, the Warriorettes answered.

McCulley singled, Callie Phillips worked a walk, and Kami Clark lined a ball into the outfield to move runners into scoring position. McCulley came home on the play to knot things up at 6-6 heading into the final inning.

Cumberland County threatened in the top of the seventh with a single, but White County kept the go-ahead run off the board.

That set the stage for the finish.

Swindell opened the bottom half with a hard-hit infield single. Addison Norvell followed with another base hit, putting two on with no outs. Fittingly, on Senior Night, it was a senior who delivered the final blow. Kylie Norvell stepped in and drove a double into right field, bringing Swindell home and giving the Warriorettes a 7-6 walk-off win.

Senior Mabry Taylor went the distance in the circle, working all seven innings. She allowed six runs — four earned — on 10 hits and one walk, striking out three while throwing 59 of her 80 pitches for strikes.

White County heads back on the road Friday at Roane County before returning home Monday to host Cookeville in the final week of the regular season.
