White County Commissioners took a closer look at the idea of expanding property tax relief during a work session Monday night, but the county’s property assessor is urging caution before moving forward.

Assessor of Property Junior Jones told commissioners there are some unintended consequences that come with carving out tax relief on portions of a property. Under current guidelines, relief can only apply to up to five acres. Jones explained that separating those acres can actually increase the taxable value of the remaining land—something that could end up hurting property owners more than helping them.
