The White County Warriorettes haven’t found the win column since March 9, and for a while Monday night, it looked like that streak might finally end.
White County jumped out to an 8-0 lead over Cookeville through two-and-a-half innings, but the Lady Cavaliers chipped away, forced extra innings, and eventually walked it off in the eighth for a 14-13 win—handing the Warriorettes their ninth straight loss.
White County wasted no time getting started. Three straight singles to open the game, followed by a productive ground ball, plated three runs in the top of the first. After sitting Cookeville down in order in the bottom half, the Warriorettes went right back to work.
A leadoff walk by Abbi Hutson set the table in the second, and another walk from Kylie Norvell—combined with aggressive baserunning—put runners in scoring position. Anna McCulley delivered with an RBI single to left, and Norvell later scored on a passed ball to stretch the lead to 5-0.
The Warriorettes added three more in the third, capitalizing on a single, an error, a walk, and a couple of passed balls to build what felt like a commanding 8-0 advantage.
That’s when the momentum began to shift.
Cookeville got three runs back in the bottom of the third, then added two more in the fourth while holding White County scoreless for the first time all night. Suddenly, the lead was trimmed to 8-5 midway through the game.
The turning point came in the fifth. After another scoreless inning from the Warriorettes, Cookeville loaded the bases with a pair of walks and a hit batter. They pushed across two runs before a three-run home run over center field flipped the game on its head. By the end of the inning, the Lady Cavaliers had surged in front 10-8.
But White County answered.
Singles from Annie Burrier and Kaylee Sanders, followed by a perfectly placed sacrifice bunt from Miah Jo Swindell, moved runners into scoring position. Hutson came through again, driving a single into center field to tie the game at 10-10.
Cookeville scratched across a run in the sixth, and White County matched it in the seventh to force extra innings.
In the eighth, the Warriorettes looked like they might finally put it away. After two quick outs, Addie Norvell singled, Kylie Norvell drew a walk, and McCulley delivered again with a base hit to give White County the lead. Kylie Norvell later scored on a passed ball, pushing the advantage to 13-11.
But it wasn’t enough.
In the bottom of the eighth, Cookeville answered once again. An intentional walk, an error, and a hard-hit single tied the game before a bloop hit into shallow center field completed the comeback and sealed the walk-off win.
Annie Burrier started in the circle for the Warriorettes, going four innings while allowing three hits and striking out nine. Of the eight runs scored during her time in the circle, five were earned. Senior Mabry Taylor took over in the fifth, surrendering nine hits and six runs—three of them earned—in the loss.
What started as a runaway win turned into a tough reminder of how quickly momentum can shift, as the Warriorettes let an early lead slip away in a back-and-forth battle that ended one run short.
