After a week away from the field, the White County High School baseball team returned to action Thursday night, hosting Cannon County.

The Warriors have had their share of early-season struggles. At times, defensive miscues have cost them. Other nights, the bats have gone quiet. And in some games, both have shown up at once. But Thursday night felt different. White County put together a complete performance and walked away with a 4-1 win over the Lions.

The game didn’t start clean. Griffin Adams took the mound and recorded two quick strikeouts before issuing three straight walks to load the bases. It looked like trouble might be brewing again. Instead, the sophomore settled in and struck out the final batter of the inning to escape the jam. The Warriors couldn’t capitalize offensively in the bottom half, and Cannon County answered with three quick outs of their own.

The stalemate held until the top of the third, when the Lions finally broke through. A single, followed by a stolen base and an error behind the plate, allowed Cannon County to take a 1-0 lead.

White County answered immediately.

Cole Sims drew a walk, then advanced to second on a catcher’s error and to third on a passed ball. Austin Pionke lifted a fly ball to center that was mishandled, allowing Sims to score while Pionke reached second. Moments later, Pionke came home on a ground ball from Cole Gentry that was misplayed at shortstop, giving the Warriors a 2-1 advantage heading into the fourth.

It turned out to be all the offense they needed, but White County added insurance in the fifth. Pionke reached base again and eventually scored on a Gentry double. Gentry later crossed the plate as well, pushing the lead to 4-1.

On the mound, Adams battled through 3.1 innings, allowing just one hit and one run while striking out five. Control was an issue at times, but he worked out of trouble when it mattered. Pionke took over in relief and shut the door, allowing just one hit while striking out six to secure the win.

The victory moves White County to 2-5 on the season and sets up a quick turnaround with a rematch against Warren County on Friday. The Pioneers took an 11-2 win in the first meeting earlier this month. This time, the Warriors will look to return the favor on the road and even the series.
