Rock Island resident and White County native Harley Gaines Slatton, 89, was born Jan. 19, 1937 and died Jan. 31, 2026 at his residence following an extended illness.
He was a Veteran of the United States Air Force, the United States Army, Korea and Vietnam, a retired aircraft mechanic, and the son of the late Robert Taylor and Arminda Denton Slatten. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Judith Rose Slatton; sons, Walter Ray Slatton and Richard Taylor Slatton; brother, Walter Glenn Slatten and sister, Mary Helen Slatten.
Mr. Slatton is survived by wife, Mary Alice Shockley Slatton of Rock Island; daughter Jane Hayes of Kansas; grandchildren, Cindy Johnson of Washington, Diane Moss of Kansas and Edward Hayes of North Carolina; great-great-grandchildren; nieces, Carol (Mike) McIntyre of Missouri and Heather (Chris) Mullins of Quebec, Tenn.
Graveside service and interment will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, 2026 at Preston Heights Cemetery in White County with Gary Bubba Barnes officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Thursday from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at High's.
Military grave rites will be conducted by VFW Post 5064 and American Legion Post 173.
