tate Rep. Paul Sherrell, R-Sparta, is celebrating the Tennessee House of
Representatives' recent passage of legislation allowing public schools to display historic documents on campus.
House Bill 47, sponsored by State Rep. Michael Hale, R-Smithville, and co-sponsored by Sherrell, permits the display of historically significant documents in schools, including the Ten Commandments, the Declaration of Independence, the United States Constitution, the Tennessee Constitution, and the Bill of Rights.
"The Ten Commandments and other key documents have been vital to the continued success of our great state and nation," said Sherrell. "This legislation allows school districts to provide students with another valuable opportunity to understand our history and guiding principles. I was honored to support it and
look forward to seeing its positive impact in classrooms across Tennessee."
Decisions about whether to display documents, along with their size and placement, would be made by each local education agency or public charter school governing body. Participating schools may include these historically significant texts as part of instruction on the founding principles of the United States and Tennessee.
House Bill 47 passed the House of Representatives on Thursday. The companion version of the bill is expected to be heard in the Senate in the coming weeks. If passed, the bill goes to the governor's desk for his signature.
