The walking bridge at South Carter Street Park in downtown Sparta is now closed indefinitely after city officials determined it could no longer be safely used by the public. The timber bridge spans the Calfkiller River and serves as a key connector between the park’s walking trail and the sidewalks along South Young Street. Built with timbers similar to railroad ties, the structure has long been a popular path for walkers, especially on warm days.

City Administrator Tonya Tindle said the decision followed repeated acts of vandalism that damaged the bridge faster than crews could keep up with repairs.
