The Sparta Youth Basketball league got underway two weeks ago, with teams for everyone from age 3 to 17 tipping off for a winter league spent in local gyms.

In the Rookie League, four teams remain undefeated while four are still looking for their first win of the young season. Teams led by Lowery, Delaney, Armstrong, and Griffith have rolled to two straight wins while Hitchcock, Johnson, Roberts, and Boyer haven’t recorded a win yet. Teams led by Rice, Farley, Taylor, Southard, Jones, and Hood have split their games winning once and losing once over the first two weeks of the season.
With no games over the Christmas holiday weekend, it will be Jan. 3, before any of the teams get a chance at another win, and it will be two weeks after that before any of the currently undefeated teams clash.
The girls' Training League is one of the smallest brackets with just six teams competing this season. They are evenly split in the standings after the first two weeks. Teams coached by Johnson and Delaney are undefeated. Teams led by Elrod and Billings stand at one win, one loss. And teams led by Crockett and Page are looking to get into the winner’s column when they take to the court after the holiday break. While all six teams play again on Jan. 3, if nothing changes in the standings between now and then, Jan. 10, will be the day that the bracket could open up. The two currently undefeated teams will face off, as will the two winless teams.
Boys’ Training League has a clear leader with Hitchcock having three wins. However, Smith, Collins, and Weldon have all gone undefeated as well; however, they have only played two games apiece. Delaney is 2-1, and Sims is 1-2, while the remaining four teams are still looking for their first win this season.
In the Junior Girls League, teams either have no wins or no losses. Eight teams make up the bracket, and four are undefeated: Johnson, Brooks, Poss, and Delaney. The remaining four – Smith, England, Brown, and Crockett – haven’t tallied their first win yet. That will all change on Jan. 3. Poss and Johnson will tip off at 2 p.m. at Findlay Gym in a clash of the undefeated. Likewise, Delaney and Brooks will do the same at 4 p.m. at the Woodland Park gym. Two of the winless teams will move up a step in the brackets next week as well. England and Brown will face each other while Crockett and Smith also play to see who gets that win first.
In the Junior Boys League, there is a clear leader. The team led by C. Johnson has four straight wins. While Lumpkin’s team also remains undefeated, they have only played once. The remaining ten teams in the league all have at least one loss with D. Johnson, Flatt, and Crockett not recording any wins yet this year.
The Senior Girls League has just four teams in their bracket, so standings will stay much clearer throughout the season. After two weeks, Roberts remains undefeated while England remains winless. Rittenberry and Crockett both sit at one win, one loss. When play resumes on Jan. 3, it will be the top and bottom teams tipping off against each other while the two middle-of-the-standings teams battle for separation.
The final bracket, the Senior Boys League, houses nine teams with two remaining undefeated. While Crockett and Weldon haven’t lost yet, Smith Angell and Collins are looking for a win next weekend. Teams coached by Gooch and Flatt have played one more game than the other seven, and both stand at 2-1, while Flatt and Sliger are at .500 with one win and one loss each.
While there are no games this weekend, play will resume on Jan. 3, and the regular season will continue through Feb. 7.
