A proposal moving through the Tennessee General Assembly could open the door for thousands more families to use public education dollars outside of the traditional public school system. And in a county like White, where many households are directly tied to the school system, it’s a conversation that’s likely to draw strong opinions on both sides.

The bill would expand the state’s Education Freedom Scholarship program, something lawmakers say gives parents more control over their child’s education. But as the program grows, so do the questions about what it means for public schools, teachers, and communities like ours.
