White County's girls golf team opened the 2026 season with a statement victory Tuesday, July 28, claiming the team title in a three-school match at Golden Eagle Country Club in Cookeville.

Behind a dominant performance from upperclassman Lenzie Golden and a balanced lineup, the Warriorettes posted a team score of 147 to finish comfortably ahead of Cookeville (155) and Stone Memorial (187).

Golden earned medalist honors with a 1-over-par 73, the lowest round of the day. Freshman Ava Elrod followed closely with a 74, finishing in a tie for second individually with Cookeville's Lila Odom. Piper Heady, also in her first year at the high school level, rounded out White County's scoring with a 78, giving the Warriorettes three golfers under 80 — a mark no other team matched during the opening match.

The boys team faced a tougher challenge in its season opener, finishing third with a team score of 337 behind Cookeville (303) and Stone Memorial (312).

Lucas Phillips led the Warriors with an 80, tying for the seventh-lowest individual score of the afternoon. Matthew Wilson was close behind with an 81, good for the eighth-lowest round, while Tripp Tollison added an 84. Jack Carpenter carded a 92, and Logan Holland was disqualified.

Although the boys didn't contend for the team title, White County had two golfers finish inside the top 10 individually, providing a solid foundation as the season gets underway.

Opening matches often provide an early benchmark for teams adjusting to competitive play, and White County's girls wasted little time establishing themselves as a team to watch. With three players already posting sub-80 rounds, the Warriorettes demonstrated both experience and scoring depth that could serve them well throughout the season. The Warriors, meanwhile, will look to build on a pair of top-10 individual performances as they continue their schedule.
