The White County Middle School Warriors earned the right to play in the District 6AAA Tournament Championship game after a win in the semi-finals on Thursday night. Saturday’s final would pit the Warriors against the Upperman Bees, who would get the better of the Sparta team and come out on top with a 49-31 win.
White County started slow and found themselves in a 12-2 hole halfway through the first quarter. However, the Warriors defense kept the Bees from running away with the game until they could get their offense in synch. Thanks to a couple of deep shots by Carson Delong and Brayden Cope, White County was able to shrink the deficit to five to start the second quarter down just 13-8.
The Warriors climbed within two points twice in the second quarter, but the Bees went on an 8-2 run to close out the half up 23-13.
After the break, White County came out ready to turn the game into a true contest. Their defense gave up just five points while the Warrior offense went on a scoring spree. At the end of the third six-minute frame, Upperman was clinging to a two-point lead as the scoreboard read 28-26.
However, with a trip to the regional tournament on the line, the Bees got back to work in the final frame. Upperman went on a nine-point run to push the score to 37-26 before Whtie County could respond.
The Warriors would add five more points to their side of the scoreboard, but it wouldn’t be enough as the Bees took the win, and White County would receive the Runners-Up trophy.
White County will play again on Monday as they start the Regional Tournament at Upperman where they will face the Lake Forrest Middle School team from Bradley County.
