At Thursday’s School Board meeting, board members approved the school calendar that will have students returning to the classroom in what is being described as a “non-traditional” start to the 2026 – 2027 school year.
The calendar, which was sent to the board by the teacher council, has students returning to the classroom for a morning session on Friday, July 31. Students will receive a three-day weekend and attend their first full day of classes on Tuesday, August 4. After two full days of classes, students will have another day off.
Election Day is Thursday, August 6, and, in White County, schools are used as polling stations. For safety reasons, the board has a long-standing policy that students are not in the building during the election process.
Another non-traditional item on the 2026-2027 school calendar is Thanksgiving Break. Recently, White County Schools closed for three days for the Thanksgiving holiday. This year, the break will be a full week, November 23-27.
Per usual, students will get a week-long break in October and again in March as well as being out of class for 11.5 school days during the Christmas holiday.
