Warriorettes fight their way back at DeKalb

White County may not have left DeKalb County with a win Tuesday night, but the Warriorettes certainly made the Lady Tigers work for it.

After trailing 3-0 at halftime, White County found another gear in the second half, scoring three straight goals and turning what had looked like a comfortable DeKalb County advantage into a battle before eventually falling 5-3.

The Warriorettes made adjustments during the halftime break and came out with a different energy. Kaydence Redmon and Sami Benson each found the back of the net as White County erased the three-goal halftime deficit. Makayla Sullivan assisted on both of those and then added one more score on her own.

The comeback put DeKalb County on its heels and brought White County within a goal. But a handball in the box gave DeKalb a penalty kick, which they converted to push the lead back to 5-3.

For White County coach Madison Mason, the way her team responded after halftime mattered just as much as the final score.

“I am so proud of this team,” Mason said. “I told them after the game that they showed exactly how much fight they have in them. To come back after being down three goals at halftime says a lot about who we are. I’ll ride or die with the team we showed we are tonight. I really think our energy shook them and changed the game.”

The loss sends White County back home Thursday, when the Warriorettes host Watertown at 6 p.m.
