The White County High School tennis program turned in a strong performance at the Cumberland Tennis Classic Tournament held at Fairfield Glade, with both the Warriors and Warriorettes finishing fourth in a competitive field.
Teams from more than two hours away traveled to compete in the tournament, making the event a challenging early-season test. Despite it being White County’s first time participating in the tournament, both squads were able to earn solid finishes and bring home hardware.
According to White County tennis coach Topher Wiles, the day was a long one on the courts but a successful one for the program.
“It was a good day for White County tennis in the Cumberland Tennis Classic Tournament at Fairfield Glade. Teams drove from a little over 2 hours away to compete. In our first time in this tournament, both our boys and our girls teams finished strong in fourth place.”
White County also had strong showings in doubles play. The teams of John Durfee and Ethan Wiles on the boys side and Ainslee Goff and Emmie Benningfield on the girls side each earned second-place medals in their respective divisions.
Several other players contributed points toward the team totals throughout the tournament, including Jagger Osborne, Sadie Benningfield, and Katelyn Howard.
Wiles said the results reflect the continued development of the program, saying that hte program continues to grow - both in numbers and skill development - year after year.
The recent tournament required a full day of competition, with the teams spending more than 14 hours on the courts before wrapping up their matches.
“After 14 hours on the tennis courts today, we're looking forward to taking a little time off for spring break!" Wiles said. "We are proud of our racquet wielding Warriors and Warriorettes!”
