The Warriorettes suffered their fifth loss of the month Monday night — though they’ve picked up three wins along the way — as they continue to search for offensive consistency. The White County High School softball team fell to Cookeville 5-1, with the Lady Cavaliers piling up 11 hits while the Warriorettes managed just three.

It didn’t start the way it ended.

White County came out sharp, recording three quick outs before getting something going at the plate. Kylie Norvell was hit by a pitch, and Anna McCulley reached on a misplayed ground ball to put two runners on with one out. After a strikeout, Addison Howell delivered a two-out single that brought Norvell home for a 1-0 lead. But a groundout ended the inning with two runners stranded — and that would be the only run the Warriorettes would score.

Cookeville answered quickly in the second, stringing together a double and two singles to take a 2-1 lead.

White County had a chance to respond in the bottom of the inning when Miah Jo Swindell laced a triple into right field, but she was left standing there as the inning ended.

Neither team reached base in the third.

The Lady Cavaliers added to their lead in the fourth, using a single, an error, and a double to stretch the margin to 4-1. They tacked on one more in the fifth with another double and a single to make it 5-1.

From there, the Warriorettes couldn’t find an answer at the plate. Their only remaining baserunner came on a single from Abbi Hutson in the fifth.

Mabry Taylor went the distance in the circle, allowing five runs on 11 hits over seven innings. She walked two and struck out six of the 32 batters she faced.

White County will look to bounce back Tuesday with a road trip to Franklin County before closing out the regular season at home next Monday against Warren County.
