The White County High School Warriorettes opened a busy four-game week Monday night with a finish that felt more like a script than a box score. After falling behind early and clawing their way back late, White County walked it off in the seventh inning for a 9-7 win over Cannon County Lady Lions softball.
White County struck first in the opening inning. Kylie Norvell worked a walk, Anna McCulley followed with a single, and Callie Phillips drove both home with a line drive to center field to give the Warriorettes a quick 2-0 edge.
Cannon County answered — and then some — in the top of the second.
A walk and two singles put the visitors on the board, but the damage came with two outs. A single plated two runs, then a pair of singles and a walk added two more before a double cleared the bases with three runs, flipping the game to a 7-2 advantage in favor of Cannon County.
White County chipped away in the bottom half of the inning. Miah Jo Swindell singled, and Addison Norvell later drove her home when a hard ground ball to left field resulted in an error.
The game settled down over the next two innings, with both teams going three up, three down in the third and fourth. But in the fifth, the Warriorettes started to close the gap.
With two outs, McCulley drew a walk and Phillips followed with a single to set the table. Addison Howell delivered with a two-RBI double on a line drive into left field, and Annie Burrier added another run with a ground ball that found its way into center field, trimming the deficit to one.
Still trailing, White County got a quick shutdown inning in the sixth. Mabry Taylor recorded two groundouts, allowed a single, and then induced a routine fly ball to second baseman Abbi Hutson to keep it a one-run game.
The offense answered just in time.
After two quick outs in the bottom of the sixth, Addison Norvell reached on an infield single, and Kylie Norvell followed with a line drive to center field to bring her home and tie the game at 7-7.
Taylor then worked around traffic in the top of the seventh, retiring Cannon County without allowing any damage and setting the stage for the finish.
Howell led off the bottom half with a triple but was later thrown out attempting to steal home. It didn’t slow the momentum.
Burrier and AK Wallace each drew walks, bringing Swindell to the plate with two on. She delivered, sending a deep fly ball to center field that dropped for a double, scoring both runners and sealing the 9-7 walk-off win.
Taylor went the distance in the circle, working all seven innings. She allowed seven runs on 10 hits against 32 batters, finishing with 101 pitches, three walks, and two strikeouts.
White County continues its stretch of four games this week with a home matchup against DeKalb County tonight, followed by another home game Thursday against Cumberland County before closing the week on the road Friday at Roane County.
