The Million Dollar Mile Yard Sale has a new name, a new home, and more than 50 vendors ready to welcome shoppers Saturday. Now known as the Great Sparta Yard Sale, the longtime community event will take place at the White County Recreational Complex on Highway 70, rather than along Bockman Way, where shoppers have traditionally found the sale.

The change has caused some confusion, particularly because individuals may still be setting up their own sales along Bockman Way. Those sales are separate from the organized Great Sparta Yard Sale, which will bring its vendors together in one location for its inaugural Fall Edition on Saturday, Nov. 7.

The move was designed to address several challenges that came with hosting the event along a busy downtown roadway. Over the years, some businesses stopped allowing vendors to use their parking lots and sidewalks, making it increasingly difficult to find suitable spaces. At the recreational complex, vendors will have designated, approved areas to set up without those concerns.

Safety and traffic congestion were also factors in the decision. With shoppers crossing Bockman Way and vehicles slowing or stopping as drivers searched for parking, the event often created traffic backups that affected even those who weren't attending the sale. The new location allows shoppers to move safely between vendors without crossing busy streets, while keeping event traffic away from one of Sparta's heavily traveled roads.

The new location also avoids scheduling conflicts with other downtown activities, including Saturday's Veterans Day parade. Rather than competing for space with other events, the Great Sparta Yard Sale now has a large field of its own.

And it's a field White County residents already know well. The sale will be held in the same area of the recreational complex used for the annual Freedom Celebration, providing plenty of room for vendors and shoppers to spread out.

More than 50 vendors are expected to participate, offering everything from handmade crafts and baked goods to clothing, household items, and traditional yard sale finds.

While the new location offers advantages for vendors and shoppers, the event also serves a larger purpose.

The Great Sparta Yard Sale is a fundraiser for Seeds of Hope, a local 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that assists people experiencing homelessness and other hardships in White County. The organization is working to expand its physical location to better provide temporary shelter for families in need, particularly those with children.

The fundraiser is structured so that vendors can benefit from the event while also supporting the nonprofit's mission. Vendors pay a fee to reserve their spaces, but the money they make from selling their merchandise is theirs to keep. Seeds of Hope will also operate a concession stand throughout the day, with those proceeds helping support the organization.

For shoppers, there is no admission fee and no parking fee. They can browse the booths, support local sellers, and enjoy a day of shopping without paying to enter the event.

The potential benefits extend beyond the recreational complex. With the sale drawing shoppers to Sparta, local restaurants, stores, and other businesses could also see additional customers throughout the day.

For event organizer Tina Lomax, the support of the participating vendors is especially meaningful because of the families Seeds of Hope is working to serve.

“I want to thank all of our vendors that have supported our mission to help families with children have a safe place to sleep,” Lomax said. “You all are truly what community is about.”

Lomax also expressed her appreciation to White County Parks and Recreation Director Don Pearcy for working with Seeds of Hope to secure a location where the community can gather safely for a day of shopping and socializing.

Although more than 50 vendors are already scheduled, Lomax said she could rearrange some spaces to accommodate a few additional sellers. Anyone interested must contact her by noon Friday. Vendor fees are tax-deductible as charitable contributions to Seeds of Hope, subject to applicable tax rules.

Vendors may set up Friday between 2 and 4 p.m. or beginning at 5 a.m. Saturday. Gates will open to shoppers at 8 a.m. at the White County Recreational Complex, 4201 Smithville Highway in Sparta.
