The proposed expansion of the Sparta-White County Family YMCA is back on the city’s agenda for Thursday, Nov. 5. The board tabled the proposal last month after Mayor Jerry Lowery requested that the city attorney review the lease amendment.

The YMCA is requesting permission to add approximately 3,000 square feet to the west side of its existing building on Moore Street. The expansion would provide additional space for facilities and programs.

Under the proposed lease amendment, the expansion would become part of the city-owned property. The YMCA would be responsible for construction and improvements, while the city would retain ownership of the building. The existing lease, signed in 2023, runs for 20 years at $1 per month.

Other items on Thursday's agenda include:

  • Sewer repairs: Approval of an emergency purchase for repairs or replacement of a pump at the Crag Rock Pump Station. A price is still being obtained.
  • Police vehicle: Purchase of a 2027 Chevrolet Traverse for the Police Department at a cost of $39,849.57.
  • Electronic citations: First reading of an ordinance establishing electronic citation regulations, including a $5 fee for each citation resulting in a conviction.
  • Personnel: Approval of Jacob Charles Look as a reserve firefighter.

The board will meet at 5 p.m. Thursday on the second floor of Sparta City Hall. The meeting is open to the public.
