Tennessee lawmakers are moving to tighten how local agencies work with federal immigration officials, advancing a bill supporters say will close a gap in current law.

House Republicans this week approved House Bill 2018, which would require certain local law enforcement agencies to honor federal immigration detainers by holding individuals for up to 48 hours after their scheduled release. The goal, according to lawmakers, is to give federal authorities enough time to take custody when needed.
