White County’s regular season didn’t always follow a straight path, but by the time the dust settled, the Warriors had something to show for it.

After opening the year 1-6, first-year head coach Darrin Norris steadied the group and guided White County to a 12-14 finish heading into this week’s District 7-3A tournament. That turnaround — and the way the Warriors found their footing down the stretch — didn’t go unnoticed.

Norris was named the district’s Coach of the Year, highlighting the impact he made in his first season at the helm.

He wasn’t the only Warrior recognized.

Senior Austin Pionke earned District 7-3A Most Valuable Player honors, while junior Cole Gentry was named Offensive Player of the Year, giving White County two of the league’s top individual awards.

Gentry put together one of the most consistent offensive seasons in the district. He finished with a .378 batting average and reached base at a .510 clip, pairing it with a .541 slugging percentage. He matched Pionke with two home runs and added four doubles and a triple, while scoring 29 runs and driving in 13. Gentry also created pressure on the bases, swiping 17 bags over the course of the season.

Pionke’s value showed up in just about every phase of the game.

At the plate, he hit .333 with a .411 on-base percentage and a .500 slugging percentage. He tallied eight doubles and two home runs, drove in 18 runs and crossed the plate 29 times. On the bases, he led the duo with 18 stolen bases.

Defensively, Pionke spent most of his time at shortstop while also taking on a key role on the mound. He finished the year with a 3.08 ERA, recording one win, one loss and one save across 25 innings. He struck out 37 batters while facing 109, providing White County with a steady arm when called upon.

Together, the trio helped define a season that saw the Warriors grow into themselves after an early stumble.
