The White County Middle School Warriors had their chances Thursday night, but a big inning from Stone Memorial proved too much to overcome in a 7-5 loss heading into Easter break.
White County broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third inning. Haskell Simmons reached on an error, and Jack Dicus followed with a single. Both came around to score when Ryder Staggs hit a hard ball back up the middle that the Stone Memorial pitcher couldn’t handle cleanly, giving the Warriors an early 2-0 lead.
The Panthers answered right back in the bottom half of the inning.
A leadoff walk, a hit batter, and a single quickly loaded the bases. Dicus, working on the mound, settled in and got the next two batters to pop up softly in the infield for outs. But an error on a ground ball extended the inning and allowed two runs to score, evening things at 2-2 before Dicus closed it out with a strikeout.
Stone Memorial took control in the fourth.
Two walks and a White County error set the table, and a triple drove in a pair of runs. A sacrifice fly added another, pushing the Panthers’ lead to 7-2 by the end of the inning.
The Warriors didn’t go away quietly.
In the fifth, Samuel Price and Dicus drew back-to-back walks before Staggs delivered again, driving in both runners with a hard-hit ball. An error in the outfield allowed him to reach third, and he scored moments later on a ground ball from Cayden Boswell, cutting the deficit to 7-5.
That would be as close as White County would get.Noah Teeple was hit by a pitch to keep the inning alive, but the Warriors couldn’t push across the two runs needed to tie it.
Dicus took the loss, pitching four innings and allowing seven runs—just three earned—on four hits and four walks. He faced 24 batters and threw 85 pitches, 47 for strikes.
The loss drops White County to 7-6 on the season and marks their third defeat in the last five games. The Warriors return to action Monday on the road against Coffee County.
