White County officials say geological testing at the proposed Roberts-Matthews Highway site revealed major septic challenges, forcing leaders to consider costly alternatives or an entirely new location for the solid waste department.
White County’s long-discussed plan to relocate its solid waste department has hit a major obstacle — and county leaders now say the project could require either an expensive redesign or an entirely new location.
During Monday’s Solid Waste Committee meeting, County Executive Denny Robinson confirmed that geological testing at the proposed Roberts-Matthews Highway property revealed the land cannot support a traditional septic system. The issue centers on the rocky soil conditions near the old quarry site where the county had hoped to build a new home base for solid waste trucks and equipment.
Robinson said the county is now weighing whether to pursue a specialized wastewater solution or abandon the site altogether and start searching for another location.
