The U.S. Postal Service is in the business of delivering and, when it comes to those in need, postal workers are once again stepping up to deliver assistance.

Saturday, May 9, the USPS is holding its annual Second Saturday in May Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. Residents are asked to bag healthy, non-perishable food items and place them in or near their mailboxes.

McMinnville Postmaster Brent Nunley is proud to play a part in Stamp Out Hunger, now in its 34th year, and thanks the community for its support of the annual effort.

"It's a one-day drive that we do every year," Nunley said. "The great thing about this is all the food we collect goes directly to our local food bank. City residents should have received bags to put the food in and a card explaining the drive. For some of our rural customers, we didn't have enough bags and cards, but if anybody puts food out by their mailbox, we'll collect it Saturday."

Over its previous 33 years, Stamp Out Hunger has collected over 1.94 billion pounds of food distributed across the United States, Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands. According to statistics provided by the USPS, over 47 million Americans are unsure of where their next meal will come from. Over 13 million children are impacted by hunger and nearly 7.4 million seniors over 60 are food insecure.

The Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive's timing is strategic, coming during a period many local food banks find their supplies from winter donations dwindling and as many students relying on school breakfast and lunch are starting summer vacation.
