The White County Board of Education approved a plan Thursday night to use a state performance bonus to make major upgrades to the district’s transportation fleet while also sending a portion of the funds directly back to schools.

White County received the $607,000 bonus after being named one of just 22 school districts in Tennessee to earn top marks on state testing measures. District leaders said the funding gives the system a rare opportunity to address transportation needs while also investing in projects students and families will see inside individual schools.

Director of Schools Kurt Dronebarger told board members the district has struggled at times to stay on a consistent replacement cycle for buses and other school vehicles. He said using the bonus for transportation upgrades now should help the system avoid larger financial swings in future budgets.
